10. Drive (2011)
I was very, very excited to see Drive. I’m talking Up level excitement, here. A few hours before I was going to go, I found out it was rated R. R means I can’t get in (and I’m not tall enough to pass for 18). I’ll catch it on Amazon… I guess.
9. The Dark Knight (2008)
Oh boy. This is a biggie. It was, for a time, the highest ranked movie on IMDb. And it still is the highest movie on flickchart. All of my friends were talking about it at the time (some still are). But I’m just not into comic book stuff. I saw the last 10 minutes on cable once. I’ll catch it on cable… one of these days.
8. The Matrix (1999)
I was a fan of the “bigness” of Inception, plus people are referencing this a lot these days. I feel left out.
7. Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1974)
I’ve seen some excerpts, and this is my type of movie. Fawlty Towers and Keeping Up Appearances are two of my favorite TV shows ever, and Python is even drier. Coconuts.
6. The Departed (2006)
For this one, all I have to do is list names. Martin Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jack Nicholson, Mark Wahlberg, Martin Sheen, Vera Farmiga, and best of all, Alec Baldwin. I need to see this film!
5. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
I’ve seen pieces of this film, but I don’t really remember it. What I do remember is seeing 2010. Honestly, it wasn’t very good.
4. Up in the Air/The Hurt Locker/(500) Days of Summer (2009)
I’ve always enjoyed film, but I didn’t really get into it until late 2010. I missed out on a lot of films made in the decade before, and I haven’t gotten caught up. These three very different movies all look very good, and I can’t wait to see them. Also, I haven’t seen Avatar either.
3. City Lights (1931)
Charles Chaplin is up there with Hitchcock and Wilder in my mind as one of the all-time great directors. I love Modern Times and The Great Dictator, but I’ve heard that this tops those.
2. The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
The Dark Knight used to be #1 on IMDb, but now it’s Shawshank. (Here’s that link again.) I don’t know a lot about it, but people talk about how great it is.
1. The Godfather (1972)
10 days ago, you guys voted The Godfather the best picture of the 1970s. Awhile ago, Empire named it the greatest movie of all-time. I needed to see it before, but once the “all-time” sticker is applied, it gets serious.

honestly the Dark Knight isn’t that great. half the movie doesnt even deal with the main villain. It deals with some anti-chinese propaganda. real turn off.
Godfather on the other hand is king. YOU MUST SEE THIS MOVIE or you do not qualify to talk about good movies. :)
Matrix is another must see.
All that background and psychological preparation (I’ll have to watch again for anti-Chinese propaganda…) is exactly what makes the Dark Knight so great. It’s an intellectually engaging movie as much as action flick (although maybe I wasn’t so intellectually engaged if I missed the whole political arena…?). If you’re just looking for mindless action, Dark Knight won’t necessarily appeal to you. Me personally, I’m ever so grateful someone finally made a descent action movie that doesn’t just go from explosion to fight scene to car chase through an exploding fight scene, all with no real psychological attachment.
I second that. You. Haven’t. Seen. The. Dark. Knight? I live that movie and breathe Joker. Please watch!
Don’t be embarrassed that you haven’t yet seen these films, you’ve clearly got plenty of time to catch up (I’m assuming you haven’t reached 18 yet by what you’ve written!). You’ve included some absolute classics in your list (for all round entertainment), but I can’t see how #4, 9, and 10 fit into that ‘classic’ category. You’ve got to see Godfather purely because of Marlon Brando’s voice, Space Odyssey for the music, Departed for the sheer amount of mega-stars that they cast in the film. Shawshank Redemption and Monty Python require no explanation!
Classics or not, I really need to see them. But you’re right, I have time. Thank you!
I didn’t see Hurt Locker, but it’s generally agreed to be the single worst movie to have won the Oscar for Best Picture. But go see City Lights. Now.

I loved The Hurt Locker too. Terrific. Should be required watching for American citizens. I was embarrassed I didn’t see it in the theater.
My 15yo daughter still talks to me about The Hurt Locker; she’s gorgeous and has impeccable taste in movies. It’s about the way in which war changes people – irrevocably.

The Hurt Locker gets a 60/40 from people, some love it, some don’t. I thought it was a fantastic movie for it’s realism and simplicity. Happy viewing.

Man I’m embarrassed because I haven’t seen a lot of your list but I have seen Shawshank Redemption. That movie is so awesome. I haven’t seen 9,7,6,5,3,and 1 and I’m really ashamed of this because I like to call myself a lover of film. I also have never seen Scarface. maybe this week off work should be spent wisely watching movies and tv shows that I haven’t watched and should have. Hurt Locker is a good movie. Do I think it should have won best picture no but it is still a great one. 500 Days of summer has to be one of my best romantic dramas because its not the acting is superb and the story is really great. The new movie Like Crazy reminds me a little bit of it.
I haven’t seen Scarface either. Maybe I’ll get to see some of these this week, as well.
I’m not big on superhero flicks or comic book stuff either, but The Dark Knight is pretty awesome. It lives up to the hype.
I have seen all of these except for Monty Python, and they are all very much worth seeing. You are in for some real treats.

Shawshank Redemption is a must. You don’t miss much with The Matrix or Monty Python, honestly. The Departed, The Dark Knight and the three 2009 films you listed are all great, but you have time. The Godfather is really good, but beyond that it’s just necessary to see. Not many people HAVE seen Drive, so don’t worry. I don’t know anything about City Lights, so that’s not too not embarrassing. And I’ve heard 2001:A Space Odessey is crazy, but I haven’t seen it either. I’m embarrassed.

This is a great idea for a list. I read an article once about the top 10 movies people lie about seeing. #1 being the Godfather. I’m so happy that you owned up this kind of thing instead of being like other worthless people who call themselves ‘movie critics’ who think reading enough reviews about a movie means that they can judge it for themselves without actually seeing it. Once again, great list, and as everyone else has already mentioned, you won’t be disappointed by any of them.

I’m a cinema grad, and I’m embarrassed by a lot of the movies I haven’t seen. At least I finally got around to the first LOTR, and my goal of watching 50 I’ve not seen before this year is comming to completion. The Matrix might make it on my list too, or next year’s list.

Now those you’re not missing as much. They introduce some nifty for the time CGI, and they are good movies, but if you’ve read the books, the movies don’t really contribute much beyond the impressive CGI effects and some disturbingly scary scenes.

You have a fantastic voyage of discovery ahead of you. There are many, many great films waiting for you to see for the first time. I’ll suggest that you add “The Third Man” to your list. Some serious critics consider it the best film ever made.

I’m embarrassed that I haven’t seen Forrest Gump and Thelma & Louise. Probably quite a few others as well, but these two are the ones that came to mind. Oh, and Flashdance. I have the dvd, but haven’t made myself watch it yet.

I used to sneak into rated R movies all the time with my friends. It’s pretty easy, and it gives you that fun little rush without risking yourself being thrown in jail. ;)

I think it’s okay to not have seen some of these great movies. After all, we all have this kind of skeletons in our closet.
I really think that some movies (and books, for that matter) are meant to be watched in a specific moment in your life. Sometimes, you’re not ready to a a particular movie at a certain time. It’s not until several years that you get to watch it and it’s PERFECT for you. So just make up a list of the ones you know you have to or want to watch and pick a title, once in a while.
That’s very interesting. Roger Ebert once said (and I’m paraphrasing) that a movie never changes, but the viewer often does. Thanks for commenting!

couldn’t agree more, I havent seen Pulp Fiction yet because of the violence (though not gratuitous). Then came Inglorious Basterds and I thought I was ready for a round of Tarantino bloodfest. but i was wrong, I slept through it instead.
I recently got hooked with the Spartacus TV series (i found it awesome, guilty pleasures satisfied) and maybe I can take on Pulp Fiction and Basterds and appreciate it as much as others had.
I can regognize a lot of the films (that I haven’t seen) though I have seen Dark Knight, Shawshank Redemption, Departed, Hurt Locker and Godfather :D
I’ve never actually heard of City Lights, but it seems pretty interesting. You shouldn’t worry about seeing The Dark Knight. It’s on t.v. a lot.

I thought that even the Aborigines had seen these movies. Of all the films that you mentioned, I’m going most highly recommend “The Dark Knight”. Here is another one that many people from my generation haven’t seen, but seeing it is a must; “Arsenic and Old Lace”, with Carry Grant.
Anyway, for shame man. You gotta get with it, do the right thing and see these damn movies.

I was just talking to my younger sister yesterday and asked her how she could even consider studying film in college if she hasn’t even seen The Godfather yet lol. Citizen Kane is also considered one of the greatest movies ever made. If you have not seen it you should add that one to your list.

Definitely see The Godfather, parts one and two. Wait for the opportunity to see 2001 on widescreen in all of its 70mm glory. Shawshank Redemption and Monty Python appear on cable enough regularly, but they’re easily rentable.

What a waste of time! I can’t believe I’ve wasted MY TIME reading this blog.
When you hear about a great film do you see it or choose not to see it so you can add it to your poseur list? Given the number of recent films in your list, you must either never watch films or only view ones you know to be mediocre, at best. What a waste of money…and we’re listening to your advice!!!
If that isn’t bad enough, choice No. 3 is Up in the Air/The Hurt Locker/500 days of Summer none of which were any more than of-their-time films (not that 500 days was even that!) but then you add Avatar as a 4th.
Make your mind up! If you’ve decided to pick 10 films stick with 10 otherwise change your title to top 14.
Better yet, just go and see the damn films which would have saved me the embarrassment of having to list this as no. 1 in the top 10 of blogs I wish I’d never visited, let alone commented upon!

Women never seem to like Clockwork Orange… Guess I can’t blame them. It is a disturbing.
I’ve never seen the Godfather, though I own it. Same with The Dark Knight. I want to watch uninterrupted but since they are so intense, I really have to be in the mood. Shawshank? One of the best movies, ever — on so many levels. But intense. You must watch uninterrupted from beginning to end — not with people who have seen it before, either.

There are a couple on there that you should be embarrassed about specifically: the godfather, city lights, 2001 space and monty python. But not watching the other films are should not cause embarrassment. In fact one could argue that missing a couple of them allowed you to use you limited time on this earth wisely.

The Dark Knight isn’t really all that. I mean, it’s good and all (though I much preferred Batman Begins), but I have no idea where all of this “best movie of all time!” stuff (plus the top rating on IMDB, and so forth) is coming from. I’d leave that one ’til last if it were me and I hadn’t seen all these films (which it isn’t and I have, so perhaps I should shut up.)
Actually, looking at your list, I’d start with Drive while it’s still sort-of-current, and then work through the list backwards starting with The Godfather. (Though I can’t ever watch The Godfather without watching Part 2 – I don’t think it’s a spoiler to note this is both a prequel and sequel – immediately afterwards, so maybe rent them both first and then move on to Shawshank and City Lights… :) )

Shawshank is a great movie–I barely saw it last year for the first time and I’ve watched it a couple more times since then!
Oh, I join in your shame over yet not having seen 2001: A Space Odyssey (might I add I actually have it in my possession?). Or perhaps I’m amiss in calling it shame – perhaps it’s more a regret? You have listed some of my absolute favorite movies there, so, in a way, you’re just savoring the knowing of great movie-watching hours still up ahead. :)

I hate to sound like a cliche but many of these films are some of my personal favorites and I urge you to check these out as soon as possible!
But I myself have many movies I haven’t seen. Some by choice, others by just how life goes.
For example, I haven’t seen any of the original Indiana Jones trilogy. And because of that, I can’t see where much of the hate comes from for Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Cue the rabid haters.
I also haven’t seen many John Hughes movies. I love Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, but I haven’t seen The Breakfast Club or Sixteen Candles. I plan to watch The Breakfast Club soon because I do hear great things about it, but I downright refuse to watch Sixteen Candles. The Long Duk Dong caricature is incredibly insulting to me.
Several Stanley Kubrick movies elude me, such as Dr. Strangelove.
I want to watch more Godzilla movies.
I haven’t seen Indiana Jones for years. I’ve seen Ferris Bueller, but not the others. And I’ve seen Strangelove, but that was awhile ago.
Godfather, Braveheart and yes, The Matrix. And FYI, you CANNOT see Matrix Reloaded or Matrix Revolutions without seeing the original. It will NOT make any sense! Enjoy when you do catch these great films!

Okay, Seth Meyers, calm down.
“Shawshank Redemption” was adapted from a novella, “Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption,” in Stephen King’s book “Different Seasons.” I don’t know what you think of King as a writer, but read that novella, and then watch the movie and see how much of the dialogue shows up verbatim.
It’s an amazing movie, too.
King wrote the novel that Stand by Me came from. I haven’t read him, but I like Stand by Me.
Don’t waste your time with Drive. Unless you like excessive violence and no reasonable story line and a flat ending. Shawshank is worthy of your time as is The Hurt Locker.

You only live once. Time to see Shawshank. It is the greatest movie ever. The greatest. It is #1 on my list of all time great movies. It has a perfect plot, a perfect soundtrack, perfect acting, perfect cinematography. The movie is as beautiful to watch as the story is riveting and characters endearing. It’s the only movie that actually gets you to *like* convicts (Ok, not quite sure that’s a good thing…) but if you don’t feel something for Brooks, and want to be friends with Red and hate Boggs, then you’re missing out.
And the Dark Knight is a movie I’m embarassed to say I’ve seen. I don’t get what all the fascination was about. It just wasn’t that good, sorry, but neither was Heath’s acting. (Oh, hope I didn’t strike too many nerves there.)
2-Pac effect = Heath Ledger effect. I haven’t seen it, so I can neither agree nor disagree.
I was right there with you on The Godfather up until last year–I too was quite ashamed! I’m also embarrassed that I never saw Requiem for a Dream (for some reason people ALWAYS have to reference that movie) and never saw Ferris Bueller’s Day Off until I was like, 23.

I started watching the God Father but I was really sleepy at the time and didn’t last longer than 15 minutes. That movie is long, so i really need to dedicate more time to it.

I have to admit I haven’t seen most of these movies either and (500) days of summer made me really angry so I wouldn’t have recomended it, but the shawshank redemption is a MUST see!! I still remember the day i first watched this movie, and am able to enjoy it as much as the first time! definately a MUST SEE

Ashamed I haven’t seen? Star Wars, any of them. Gone with the Wind. To Kill a Mockingbird. Any Audrey Hepburn film (actually I lie, she’s in A Fair Lady isn’t she?). And Napoleon Dynamite.

I’ve seen all those films except Drive (which I don’t plan to) and (500) Days of Summer, which I might see.
I notice there’s not a single foreign language film in that list. So either you’ve seen all the “good” ones, don’t care for foreign films, or….
I much prefer the foreign language films, as they have greater depth, in my opinion, than American films. If you can dredge up “Seven Beauties”, see it. The opening 4-5 minutes alone is incisive and is on YouTube:

I relate so much to this post. My roommate always asks me “You’ve seen (insert common movie here), right?” and I have to say no. I have seen Dark Knight and The Holy Grail, but none of the other ones. I’m always embarrassed that I haven’t seen the matrix.

You’re not alone. There’s not a lot that I haven’t seen that I feel like I should see, and I consider myself to be a film enthusiast. But I just feel like it’s a matter of what makes me queasy. For example, I can’t stomach gratuitous violence – my brother gives me hell for not wanting to watch Saving Private Ryan and we even have the DVD, but I can’t with all the war violence. And that’s one reason why I probably won’t watch Drive, as much as I adore Ryan Gosling.
Also, 500 Days of Summer is a good movie, but overrated. Don’t feel ashamed about not seeing it yet, LOL.

I’ve never seen The Matrix either, except for snippets, and I found it just as snooze-worthy as the Bourne trilogy (and I like action!) I don’t know why, I just couldn’t get into them. But you absolutely should see Up in the Air, i feel that it’s quite relevant to today’s society.

The others are good too (except for the Dark Knight, sorry everyone it was very cool and Heath Ledger was unbelievable but there was NO PLOT) but for the love of God see those three for your own mental health!

Oh, I love both Up in the Air and 100 Days of Summer! And I’m fussy with my films!
What worries me about this is that some of these films have been built up, stolen from and parodied so often that seeing them now may not have the impact that they should. But do. Do see 2001 and City Lights and The Godfather. Don’t worry about seeing any Clooney films- you ingest smarminess in some other form.

If it’s any consolation, I haven’t seen The Dark Knight either. In my case it’s because of Heath Ledger…I just haven’t been able to summon up the gumption to watch this performance because I’ve heard it so brilliant. It just makes me sad…
I love Fawlty Towers and Keeping Up Appearances and wholeheartedly suggest watching Holy Grail…it’s a must. Hyacinth would get it AT ALL or she’d start twitching like when Violet calls her. :)

How keen are you on ‘foreign’ films? I find that a lot of people (because they are used to Hollywood’s version of the world) don’t get the “funny” or “poignant” parts.
We watch a lot of movies on TCM (in fact, I have the monthly schedule on my desktop) and I was going to mention that you might want to DVR Garbo Talks next Wednesday. It’s a nice little movie with the wonderful Anne Bancroft, but they’re showing it at an ungodly hour. It’s a movie about a woman’s love of movies…you might enjoy it.
hmmm. shawshank is an absolute gotta see! Pretty sure I know every line and have used concepts in several papers I’ve written. I am a Titanic virgin by choice. I boycotted the film after the media kept hyping over Leo…I was 14 and was pissed they didn’t hardly give him the time of day on “The Basketball Diaries” or “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape” (okay he was nom’ed for this one but he should have WON!)

I SO agree with you. Titanic I like, and Leo is ok in it, but he was SUPERB in Gilbert Grape. Titanic is the reason many people don’t take Leo DiCaprio seriously, regardless his being an excellent actor.

If you live in the United States, an R rating means that the movie is restricted for anyone under 17, so you don’t have to wait until you’re 18 to see an R-rated movie, just 17 (http://www.mpaa.org/ratings/what-each-rating-means).
Considering we’ve had more than 11 decades of movies, nobody expects anyone, especially teenagers, to have seen every classic film. I am a bit surprised you missed “The Dark Knight,” however, since it’s a contemporary film that was a huge hit. It transcends its comic book origins and is an example of excellent filmmaking.
Please don’t judge “2001” by its much inferior sequel. The Kubrick film is a difficult one, in that it’s very slow and at times is confusing as to why it’s showing us what’s on screen. The plot is fragmented, with the main gist not happening until half-way through the film. However, it is a beautiful movie and is very deep and philosophical, even if you have to watch it two or three times to begin to understand it.
When you finally get around to watching “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” try to watch it with someone who loves it. It’ll make the enjoyment of the movie so much better than watching it alone.

I never thought describing a movie as slow and confusing would get someone excited. I love “2001,” but usually have to watch it in 2 parts since I have a bad habit of falling asleep during it. I’ll be curious to know what you think of that film after you watch it. If possible, watch it on HD, as the picture will blow you away.

Shawshank redemption – for me – was brilliant! I bought that DVD.
Holy comments batman! I really like movies but I have to really want to see it if I’m ever going to actually sit down and watch a movie. 500 Days of Summer is a great movie, but a few of the others on your list I have never seen either. I love the Matrix as well.
The only one I feel like lecturing you about is the Godfather. There are a lot of great movies I have not seen but that one is really a must.

You can live without the depressing Up In The Air. Trust me. Yes, If you haven’t watched 2001, you’re missing something. As I was telling someone else recently, If you haven’t seen the sequel you’re also missing something. It was, in my view, better than the original. Although the original was unique and a real trailblazer. As for mobster movies, They give me nightmares. I don’t usually want to see them, although I’ve seen a few that I thought were really amazing and I was glad I did see them. The Departed falls into that category.
Does The Godfather also fall into that category? Thanks for the input!
The Godfather would be the type of mob movie that I would find disturbing and try to avoid. I haven’t seen it. I don’t plan to. It just doesn’t draw me. It’s too… realistic, with no entertainment value. In my opinion.
The Godfather is not a mob movie like Goodfellas, for example. It’s about family and the kind of honor that should go with it. True, mobsters are not heroes, but the movie never says they are; actually, it tells you that in the end, what goes around, comes around, and your bad actions come back to bite you in the ass… there are lots of movies in which there are antiheroes, not heroes. And that’s ok, since the world is not divided into bad guys and good guys.
There are a lot of supposedly “great” movies I haven’t seen either, but you really must stop blogging long enough to watch the Departed. Shawshank, Dark Night, Monty Python–all excellent movies. But seriously, go watch the Departed. Now.

Hey themovieblog8 — nice list! I also did not really get into film until more recently. Something tells me I’m a little older than you, but a few movie’s I’m embarrassed I haven’t seen are: Ferris Bueller, Jaws and Fast Times at Ridgemont High.
Shawshank is a friggin’ amazing movie. Put that ahead of 500 days of summer, for sure.
Also, if you haven’t already, check out Besson’s The Professional. Really great story and such beautiful cinematography.

You should check out the original HK film (Infernal Affairs) that The Departed originated from, too. It’s actually a trilogy, and The Departed covered the first film. One of the best trilogy I’ve watched, the other being The Godfather, of course. :D
Don’t feel too bad…I haven’t seen most of the movies you mentioned and I am an avid movie buff! I’ll take your list from the top…
1. Drive – I still haven’t seen this either and I really want to.
2. The Dark Knight – By far my favorite movie ever…cannot believe you haven’t watched it yet…this is NOT a comic book movie at all. Please watch it!
3. The Matrix – Used to be my favorite movie ever…you should watch this ASAP…OMG…
4. Monty Python – Have never seen it and honestly have no clue what it is
5. Departed – Also never saw it but you listed Mark Wahlberg as an actor in the movie which means I absolutely HAVE TO watch it now. LOL
6. 2001: A Space Odyssey – Have never seen any of these and don’t plan on it
7. 500 Days of Summer/Hurt Locker/Up In The Air – Saw 500 Days of Summer…it was ok…Haven’t seen the other two though.
8. City Lights – Have never seen it and had no clue what it was when I saw the title.
9. Shawshank Redemption – I have definitely seen this movie. This is a Stephen King book turned movie and I watch and read any and everything released by Stephen King. This is a good movie. Definitely watch it.
10. The Godfather – I have also never seen this movie. I didn’t think it was my type of movie so I never bothered to watch it.
I enjoy horror, mystery, sci fi and fantasy movies which I guess is why some of these were so unfamiliar to me. There aren’t many movies that I could say I’m embarrassed that I haven’t seen, but there are definitely some I wish I hadn’t seen! LOL
I really went to see the Dark Knight because Batman was my favourite super hero since I was a kid.
I only watched 500 Days of Summer and Up In The Air on cable. Although not exactly crazy about seeing these, I watched
anyway.

u should really consider watching all of star wars and planet of the apes and i do mean the originals , not like the new rise of the planet of the apes they made. Those oldies are GREAT! I just recently bought the star wars complete saga and its really GOOD!

Anyway, I’m still not entirely sure the ending of the first Matrix movie makes sense. If you see it and after you’re not caught up in the moment anymore, ask yourself: Why does Keanu Reeves get up after Carrie-Anne Moss tells him to? (“Now get up!”) Why, exactly? If you try to come up with a specific answer… well, I find it pretty difficult.
Love the post! You’re missing some great movies, but also I’m sure you’ve seen a ton of good films if you truly are a film lover. So far this is the only post of yours I’ve read, and I’m quite excited to read some more. You have a great writing style–especially for a 15 year old! I wish I was writing as well as you at your age.

I haven’t seen some of the movies you’ve listed either. But I’m surprised that you haven’t seen The Matrix or The Dark Knight. Not judging, but just surprised since they’re pretty mainstream movies.
Drive was so-so for me. Not good, not bad. Most people would probably rate it as bad. I just think it’s interesting.
I think Hurt Locker is brilliant. It’s the reason why I’ve started liking Jeremy Renner as an actor.
Monty Python – it might not be funny for everyone but I love it to bits. It’s a source of a lot of gaming pop culture references.
I heard so much about The Shawshank Redemption that I finally caved in and rented it. Well worth the viewing. The ones you have to watch for are those that you know you’ll never get that 90 minutes (or however long the film is) back again. Wasted time. Enjoy your blog.
I just noticed that you posted you’re 15. You have a lot of movie sophistication. Hitchcock is among my favs. “Godfather” is terrific and is one my male co-workers used to quote ad nauseam (but, I do that, too).
U sure have missed some. I like George Clooney’s “Up In The Air.” It’s is not a bore for sure. The two other movies tagged along with it are nice to watch as well.
I have only seen The Dark Knight, The Matrix and The Godfather fully. I’ve watched bits of Up in the Air/ and (500) Days of Summer. Have watched only parts of The Departed but it’s original Hong Kong version Infernal Affairs (2002) I have caught it in its entirety. Brilliant stuff that was!
Considering I think of myself as a movie buff and the fact that I am at least 6-7 years older than you (from what I understand), you’ve got plenty of time to catch up yet. ;-)

Even I’ve seen 3 out of the 10 you listed… and I’m ALWAYS the girl who has that confused look on her face when someone makes a movie reference. Matrix is the only one (out of the 3) that I’d say is a must watch. If you’ve seen and liked Inception, you’ll love it :)

I always get “shamed” by people when I say I’ve never seen Pulp Fiction. I think I’m afraid of Tarantino’s brand of disgusting violence, but maybe I’m safe with this one? I did like Inglorious Basterds.

I haven’t seen some of these either. And I fell asleep during ‘Avatar’, even though the live action bits had been filmed in my home town (‘Was that Signourney Weaver walking down the street over there?’). Potentially embarrassing, but on the other hand, it’s all a matter of personal taste – and popularity doesn’t mean it’s going to suit everybody. Maybe you’ve seen other movies that you figure were as good? I know I have. Great post!

Drive deserves to be top of the list. I can’t speak highly enough of it. I think Dark Night has some intense scenes, with really strange sonic qualities, and a great Joker, but overall, not fantastic.
The space-out sequence in 2001 astounds me, and as far as Kubrick goes, you can’t ‘imagine’ better than he can create.
If you want to see a Leo D. movie, definitely see Departed, as Inception was as sucky as sucky gets. In the Inception genre of mind-bending/parallel realities/sci-fi, Matrix is a billion times better.
You should put THE DEPARTED on NUMBER 1. :D I love that movie. Although the Hongkong original movie where it was based on was way better. :D
I confess I have tried — really tried — to watch INHERIT THE WIND several times but just can’t stay awake the whole time. I’m not sure why this film is considered “great” other that the spectacular sets and special effects for the era that it was made. A simple story, really, with no surprises. Fiddledee!

Don’t bother with Shawshank Redemption. It’s way overrated. If you didn’t see the Matrix when it came out, you missed the wave so don’t bother. The Departed has a lame ending. Few people understand 2001: A Space Odyssey (though it’s so far above 2010 you can’t even compare the two).
The only movie on that list you really need to see is The Godfather. So much American Culture/references etc… are based on that movie, it’s unbelievable. Get The Godfather tonight and watch it.

Hey there! Shawshank is my favoritest movie of all time. I’ve probably seen it more than 30 times. And this is just my opinion, but my recommendation for the Godfather is to pick a Saturday or Sunday and watch the entire trilogy over the weekend. Most people didn’t like part 3 as much as the other two, and that’s understandable. But I think it was an important piece in terms of tying up loose ends.

OK, so you need to go out now and rent/buy Monty Python and the Holy Grail (and for that matter The Life of Brian as well) and also 2001: A Space Odyssey. I know next to nothing about film (and there are SO many films I have not seen) but I know that you should watch these!!
Python is hilarious (and I’m a Brit so I’m biased) and 2001 is weird and wonderful and haunting.

In the case of The Godfather (and The Godfather part II), believe the hype and try to prioritize seeing them. The Matrix is also a significantly important piece of cinema
You must see The Shawshank Redemption (when you’re old enough – I can’t remember what the certificate is). I saw it at university. Some friends had to make me watch it because I couldn’t understand the appeal of a prison film. Two hours later, with tears streaming down my cheeks, I could.
Don’t see Titanic, though. It’s dreadful in so many ways. Instead, see A Night to Remember. It tells the same story in half the time and with far more emotional depth. It also eschews the patronising stereotypes and irritating sentimentality of Titanic. It will save you an hour and a half of your life!
As for Drive – as others have said, it appeals to some people’s taste and not others’. If it would help you to decide, see my review of it (http://karenmurdarasi.suite101.com/drive-movie-2011-a389729) – but remember that film certificates are there for a reason, and you can’t unsee things once you’ve seen them.
I’ve been watching “The Story of Film: An Odyssey” (spot the reference?) on More4 (UK TV channel). It’s amazingly educational and has made me want to see all sorts of films I’d never even heard of. If you get the chance to see it, do.

At your age, we can forgive you! But do catch those movies. Some are really worth watching it. My personal favs from your list are: the dark knight (with joker), the matrix trilogy, the departed (and try watching the hong kong versionl), and The Shawshank Redemption. and i have to admit, i am embarrassed too, that some of the movies you listed, i have not watch them yet. shame on me!
These are all time classic! You should start with Drive and see it in a theatre.
Then The Shawshank Redemption because it is a brilliant movie!
If you just want to laugh and never stop, Monthy Pyton is the right one!

I also have not seen the Shawshank Redemption and I have never seen The Godfather Part 2. Not seeing Shawshank has been an inconvenience since it put a halt on some conversations, but not seeing Godfather Part 2 lead to some honest embarrassment since I have cultivated an image of being well versed in fine cinema.

I’m a grammy, but I REALLY LIKE Shawshank Redemption. I own it. One of the lines in there is my second favorite movie line – ever. But I won’t spoil it for you. And the Godfather? If you’re going to bother to watch Scarface, which is a crappy over rated movie with a horrid fake accent (which is not even remotely Cuban) you need to watch Goodfellas. It is THE best gangster movie, is a REAL story and is a classic.
The Departed is good. I’ve seen Shawshank Redemption, it isn’t that fabulous. I mean it’s good, but I think other movie deserves the number 1 rank in IMDB.
Watch the Godfather first, it’s fantastic. Think I was about 15 when I first saw it on VHS and it just is the most wonderful film there is. Shawshank you need to get hold of pronto too, wonderful story.
I wouldn’t worry about the Departed (it’s a sympathy Oscar for Scorcese) – get Infernal Affairs (the Hong Kong-made original) instead. I like you (I’m 27) also haven’t seen 2001 but it’s definitely on the list.

While you definitely need to watch Shawshank Redemption, do yourself a favor and read the book first.
“Rita Hayworth & The Shawshank Redemption” is a novella written by Stephen King in the book “Different Seasons”, which is a pretty good read.
Fun Fact – one of the other novellas in “Different Seasons” (“The Body”) was made into the classic film “Stand By Me”.

You might be setting yourself up for a letdown with the movie 500 days of summer. I was annoyed with main character Summer.

As someone much cleverer than me sort of said, Don’t think of them as great movies you’ve missed, but as great movies you’ve yet to see! You’re young, you’ve time. Some great movies in that list – but some are more essential than others, imo. I wasn’t crazy about The Departed – the original film it’s based on Infernal Affairs, is much better.

I recommend you see ‘The Matrix’ part 1 and ‘2001’. They are both great movies. Unfortunately the second and third part of the Matrix aren’t quite as good. Monthy Python is funny enough, though his humour is quite strange. I also recommend that you watch ‘Some like it hot’ and ‘Dr.Strangelove’. They are both in Black and White, but they are still great.

2001 is a great movie! But if you like “normal” paced movies, i.e. 2010…and you weren’t impressed by 2010…the opening will probably put you to sleep.

500 Days of Summer tried too hard. Its overt indie references and attempts to be so quirky it’s not cool, but by being not cool it is cool were annoying.

You should be. Though I must say I am in the minority that found Batman Begins a better film. Both are simply awesome.

eh. If it was 2000 I would say yes, but the originality that made the Matrix superb has been surpassed and now the movie only can showcase Keaneu’s crappy acting.
7. Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1974)

Good film. I enjoyed the movie, but not more than a one-time viewing. The Hong Kong version that the film was adapted from is much better.
5. 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
You might be happy you have not seen this. I think someone may be encouraged to see the sequels after seeing the first and be so offended in their quality that not seeing the first is a better place in life.
4. Up in the Air/The Hurt Locker/(500) Days of Summer (2009)
Hurt Locker is a must see. Never seen the other films, not really sure they are my piece of pie.

Good, but as a fan of Stephen King I am rarely a fan of his movie adaptations. This is one of the few that is watchable. But after years of disappointment it almost loses quality points from years of bad films associated with his books.

1. The Godfather (1972)
Hated every single Godfather movie. I get crap for it every time I voice my opinion, but the movies make me want to claw at my eyes. Virtually every mobster movie paints the mafia in a positive or hero light and they are cast as protagonists when they are nothing more then serial killers with friends.
The difference with Godfather and the Departed is ultimately they are not glorifying the role of a mobster.
Good list, but in the end you really don’t need to see all of them.

Up in the Air is, IMO, a very over rated movie. I watched it and found it to be a movie which I quickly dismissed from my memory. But I guess it depends on individual tastes.

Re: movies that I’m embarrassed I haven’t seen: Gone with the Wind. Well, I have seen part of it but I’ve never actually sat down and watched the whole movie.
It was a surprisingly easy watch, for me! I’ve seen GWTW all the way through twice now, and every time I see it’s on TCM, I’ll sit down and enjoy an hour or so of it.
I saw Dark Knight just a few months ago and I was completely blown away at the plot, and I’m a comic guy and very familiar with Batman since the first movie back in 1989.
Trust me, you won’t be disappointed even if it is nearly three hours long. Best action movie ever hands down.
Nearly 3 hours long? Wow. Still, I hope I enjoy it when I see it (soon).
I haven’t seen a few of the movies on your list either, but of the ones I have… I will tell you that The Godfather is as good as they say, Shawshank Redemption is fantastic as well (I’ve seen it quite a few times), Drive was really well done – but a bit violent, and I enjoyed Up in the Air and 500 Days of Summer but didn’t find them life changing. Just my opinion. Good luck making your way through your list!
I only ask that you see 500 days of summer. It will leave you with a happy go lucky feeling, yet riddled with reverance, and a peculiar desire to listen to hall and oates (made it my ringtone!)
The only one i would say see now is The shawshank redemption, it is one of my favourite films. The godfather is overrated but watchable.
My embarrassment was when not ever seeing the original Star Wars. I have seen Empire Strikes back and Return of the Jedi numerous times, but never the original. I didn’t see Star Wars or as they call it episode 4 until I was a freshman in college. A nice friend of mine brought an old VHS tape and we watched the original trilogy.

I’m seriously impressed that someone under 18 feels the emotion of shame at not seeing City Lights. Chaplin is great. Modern Times is worth checking out, too. Also, Great Dictator, a must see. Chaplin satires Hitler in at a period in history when it was not popular in America to do so, before we entered WWII. Incredibly brave and poignent, as well as hilarious.

There aren’t any movies I’m embarrassed to have not seen. After I saw my first thousand movies… I realized something. I still like movies, but there just is no real urgency. Still I think I have seen all of the movies on your list and most of them are pretty good. Also I think the ones I didn’t care for were liked a lot by many of my friends. Movies can be magical, can’t they?

I think you should include few more in your list. Like Good Will Hunting (1997), 10 Things I Hate About You, A Walk to Remember & If Only. However it depends on your choice ,how it goes but you should watch these movies if you have taste of romantic movies. Just check’em out.

You have a pretty awesome knowledge of film at such a young age, but just a short note: you can’t have a respectable conversation about film if you haven’t seen Shawshank, The Godfather(s), and the Departed… in fact, add to your list of must see’s if you haven’t already caught these greats:
1. ALL Scorcese… if you don’t love the film Gangs of New York, get out of the film critic business because you suck
2. ALL Kubrick. even the bad ones
3. The Big Lebowski and then move on to the rest of the Cohen Brothers, especially Fargo.
4. Wes Anderson films because there aren’t that many of them and they are all funny.
5. Also, check out these gems, which are musts – American History X, Virgin Suicides, Fight Club, and The Sixth Sense.

I watch movies no matter what. Sometimes, I watch movies not in plain interest but just by curiousity. I watch movies even though I expect to get disappointed or not to get a lot from it.
While they are not bad movies, I don’t think you’re missing a lot without watching Up in the Air. The Hurt Locker is a really good one, but really, it’s a question mark on deeming the 2009’s best. 2009 is an awful year for movies anyways. 500 Days of Summer is guilty pleasure for me.

I haven’t seen The Godfather (yet) either. It’s one of those things that just HAS to be done in life I think. I’ve seen countless spoofs on the whole Marlon Brando accent thing, yet failed to see the movie itself.
I’ve watched the Drive trailer at least 10 times and have the soundtrack – my swooning will have to wait until Christmas when I can drool over Ryan Gosling in his jacket and super driving skills – oh so attractive.
Hmm – what am I embarrassed of not seeing? Psycho is certainly a classic that I’ve missed. Also, The Pianist and The Shining (I gave up after 30 minutes) – I’m such a softy, too scared by horror films! Suck it up, I know….
WAIT! If you haven’t seen it, then Heat is DEFINITELY a film to add to your ’embarrassed’ list. Great cast again – little Pacino and Robert de Niro with ultimate attitude and slickness. Supreme movie.

Ah, man, The Matrix was the first movie I was ever obsessed with. There’s so much in their to see and think about, it’s incredible. And the action doesn’t hurt either, lol.

I pride myself on my love for Italian Mafia movies, but I have never seen any of the Godfather films. I feel like a walking hypocrite.
Does anyone else think Drive could be left off this list?

I still haven’t watched the Godfather. For some reason it doesn’t appeal to me. On another note, I feel embarrassed when I tell people I haven’t seen Casablanca and Titanic. Or any oldies movies besides Gone with the Wind…which I highly recommend.
The Matrix really needs to be seen on a big screen or you lose a lot of the effect – same as Inception.
The Godfather is OK, but The Godfather Pt 2 is much better.
Shawshank is a MUST for anyone who claims to love film.
500 Days of Summer wasn’t all that – nor was Up In The Air. I was surprised that one had Oscar nominations to be honest.
But this is the beauty of film – one man’s love is another man’s hate! :D

space odyssey has very impressive visual effects considering of course that was done back in the late 60s. however, i think that watching it requires great focus for one can easily get lost with all its symbolism and slowly developing plot. it is a very good material for students taking up film making ‘though.

Embarrassed? Hardly. I suppose some of the movies listed here by you are the ones who all folks know about, but few actually have seen from the very beginning to the very end.
If you like cinema then you should definitely see all of these movies.

Don’t fret too much about Up In The Air. It’s amusing enough but too soft at its core to be a genuine satire. Plus the product placement for the likes of American Airlines and Hilton Hotels is SO in your face! On the other hand, The Third Man is my number one film ever ….. A good list here… The Dark Knight is probably my favourite movie ever. Personally I found 2001 dull beyond belief, but it definitely has it’s place in cinema, Shawshank Redemption is one of the most emotionally compelling movies I’ve seen, I watch it every 2-3 years.

Really haven’t seen the Godfather or Dark Knight yet? Or The Matrix? Wow. My condolences. As for 2001 A Space Odyssey, you cannot!!! judge the movie by comparison with 2010. It’s all about the director. If you can appreciate Kubrick (shame on you if you can’t) you MUST see 2001. Otherwise you’ll probably just fall asleep as it’s just not the sort of movie you can watch lightly.
While your experience with older films is commendable and impressive, you’ve clearly got some catching up to do!

you must watch shawshank. I won’t say it’s the best movie ever made, but it’s certainly my favorite movie since the godfather, which is one of the few movies I make a point of watching at least once a year (another being The Big Lebowski, which is also an excellent film).
I thought citizen kane was kinda boring as far as the story, though if you’re into film, it’s a pioneering film, and probably should be in any film-o-phile’s repertoire.
Gone with the wind and casablanca I found quite entertaining, enough that I ended up reading the books which inspired the former.
